Private Lessons Policy and Information
30 minute lessons are best for beginners and fine for early intermediate levels. Students taking their Certificate of MeritTM piano exams above Level 3 are required to take 45 minute lessons, and late intermediate through advanced students are also recommended to take 45 minute to one hour lessons. Contact the studio by clicking "contact" in the bar above to request current tuition rates.
Tuition paid at the beginning of each month reserves a weekly private lesson spot for the student as well as covers other group workshops and recitals held throughout the year. Students are scheduled for 47 private lesson times spots in the studio calendar each year. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in quarterly online workshops as well as two recitals per year held at a large venue. Annual tuition is divided into 12 equal payments so that the monthly tuition amount remains the same regardless of whether there are 3, 4, 5 or 6 lessons and events in that particular month. An annual calendar is prepared with time off for holidays marked. If tuition is not paid for the month due to an extended gap in lessons such as taking a month or two off in the summer, then the student's reserved spot in the studio calendar will be opened up to the wait list.
If the student will miss a lesson due to illness or a school/work related conflict, please notify me as soon as possible. If you request a makeup lesson, I will check to see if there is another open spot available during the week of the missed lesson, or the following week. Although there is no guarantee that there will be an open spot available for a makeup, or that the spot I offer will work with the student's schedule, I do my best to help ensure students receive their lessons. Students who have consistency in their lesson attendance progress at a much better rate than those with sporadic lesson attendance. No shows (missing a lesson without notifying me in advance of the lesson time) and missing a scheduled makeup lesson forfeits the lesson. Please limit requests for a makeup for lessons missed due to social choices.
If I cancel a lesson, I will offer an alternate time or a refund of a portion of the monthly tuition.
Please give a minimum of two weeks notice (and preferably a month) before discontinuing lessons as a courtesy and to allow me time to reschedule another student into the spot being vacated.
Many different materials are used including method books (for beginners,) standard classical repertoire, and current popular and contemporary music. I encourage students to let me know what style of music they are excited to learn, and do my best to incorporate their preferences into their study plan. The cost of materials is not included in the tuition. In addition to teaching students to read music and play with good technique and a good sound, I also include theory, ear training and other aspects of musicianship needed to be a well rounded pianist.
Students are encouraged to practice at home daily for at least the length of their lesson time. Those wishing to progress at a faster rate should increase the length of the practice time. Some students may need daily reminders from parents to go to the piano and practice. Students should keep their fingernails short to encourage better hand position and provide finger agility.
Acoustic pianos are the preferred choice for piano lessons. High quality keyboards are acceptable for up to the first year or two of lessons, but after that it is highly recommended to acquire an acoustic piano for the student. Students who have keyboards usually do not progress as quickly and have certain limitations compared to students using acoustic pianos. Classical piano techniques do not translate well on the keyboard. and it can be difficult to develop the proper finger strength practicing solely on keyboards.
